Also, when asked if they believe that it is proper and beneficial for church leaders to speak on a variety of social topics, the majority (75.5 percent) said it was proper. Disconnected from their other answers, this could suggest a strong expression of Sacro-Clericalism; however, more likely, the participants are tolerant of the pastors speaking about controversial matters so that they can receive more information on the topic to make up their minds later. “Speaking Out” on social matters is not the same thing as condemning the people doing them.

Nevertheless, overall, the respondents were more tolerant than condemning when it came to their judgment on holistic milieu practices. They are more tolerant of the freedom of any person to investigate other spiritual avenues; however, they are not actively or personally pursuing these alternative spirituality groups or paths in substantial numbers.

4.3 Holistic Milieu McMinnville Demographics

With such a small sampling, it is difficult to get a full grasp of the demographics of this group, but the holistic milieu surveys do provide some information (See Figure 11). In the holistic milieu survey, 60 percent of respondents indicated they were female, 20 percent indicated they were male, and 20 percent chose to not respond). Regarding their age, 60 percent of respondents indicated that they were age fifty to sixty-four, 10 percent indicated that they were age thirty-five to thirty-nine, and 10 percent indicated that they were age sixty-five to sixty-nine. Concerning their home life, 70 percent indicated they were married and 10 percent indicated that they were living alone with children. Furthermore, 30 percent marked that they owned their homes without a mortgage, 30 percent marked that they had homes with mortgages, and 30 percent marked that they were renting.

When queried about their educational backgrounds, 80 percent indicated that they were attending or had attended a college. Also, 20 percent indicated that they were in full-time education—10 percent marked that they were in graduate school. Some 20 percent were studying arts and humanities, 10 percent were studying business or economics, 10 percent were studying engineering, 10 percent were studying biology, 10 percent were studying the natural sciences, 20 percent were studying medicine, and 10 percent were studying religion.
